Council
Role of Council
The College of Chiropractors of Alberta is governed by a Council of 10 persons:
- Five regulated chiropractors in good standing
- Five members of the public appointed by the Government of Alberta
Public members provide a critically necessary public-oriented perspective and ensure decisions and actions made by Council are in the best interest of Albertans.
The Chair and Vice-Chair are appointed by sitting Council members, and can be either a regulated chiropractor or a member of the public.
Council governs in a manner that respects and protects the privilege of regulation granted to the profession by the Health Professions Act. Council is responsible for making decisions that best serve the public interest and ensure the quality of chiropractic care in Alberta.
Council defines the Code of Ethics, Standards of Practice, and Bylaws to ensure Alberta chiropractors provide safe, competent and ethical chiropractic care to Albertans.
Council Position Statements and Key Messages
The Council of the College of Chiropractors of Alberta (CCOA) develops position statements and key messages to provide clear, consistent, and principled guidance on matters related to chiropractic regulation and the public interest.
These statements reflect Council’s current position on key regulatory issues and are intended to support transparent communication, informed decision-making, and a shared understanding of CCOA’s role as Alberta’s chiropractic regulator. They are grounded in CCOA’s legislated mandate to regulate the profession in the public interest and to ensure safe, ethical, and competent chiropractic care for Albertans.
Position statements and key messages help promote consistency, transparency, and accountability in communications with registrants, government, stakeholders, and the public. They support openness in the College’s decision-making and regulatory approach by clearly communicating the rationale, principles, and public interest considerations that inform Council’s positions. They also assist Council in responding to emerging issues, questions, and opportunities in a manner that aligns with CCOA’s statutory obligations, regulatory principles, and strategic priorities.
These statements are intended to inform and guide discussions and communications; however, they do not replace legislation, standards of practice, Council policies, or the professional judgment required when addressing specific circumstances.
As regulatory issues evolve, Council may review and update these position statements and key messages to ensure they remain relevant, accurate, and aligned with leading regulatory practices.
