About the College of Chiropractors of Alberta

The College of Chiropractors of Alberta (CCOA) is responsible for the protection of the public and oversees the registration, continued competency, and discipline of chiropractors within the legislative framework of the Health Professions Act. 

The CCOA’s regulatory role of protecting the public and patients is in accordance with the Health Professions Act (including the Chiropractors Profession Regulation) and is accomplished by:

• Registering Chiropractors in Alberta
• Establishing a Code of Ethics, Standards of Practice, Bylaws and other practice guidelines
• Establishing, monitoring and evaluating professional, clinical and ethical standards
• Investigating complaints and initiating disciplinary proceedings when necessary
• Establishing a continuing professional competency program for all regulated chiropractors

Governance

The chiropractic profession is regulated in a shared regulation model. This means that the responsibility for regulating chiropractors in the public interest is shared equally between the public and the profession.

The CCOA is governed by a Council, made up of five regulated chiropractors appointed by council and five members of the public appointed by the Government of Alberta. The Council Chair and Council Vice-Chair are elected by Council members.

Council governs the College at a high level. It establishes a Code of Ethics, Standards of Practice and other practice rules for the profession. Council also sets the CCOA’s strategic direction. See the CCOA 2022-2027 Strategic Plan.

The operations of the CCOA is managed by the CEO and supported by regulatory and professional administrative staff.
